Special Spots we enjoy
These are just a few of our favorites that we have found from exploring; places that fill our soul or are a little off the beaten path but ones for which we keep returning. Sunday Service: If you are looking for a local church, there are several in the area but our favorite, St. Bernadette, sits beneath Grandfather Mountain in Linville, 15 minutes from Knob Hill Chalet. Secret Sunsets/Sunrises: On nice days, if you are looking for the best sunset spot, hit the Blue Ridge Parkway towards Grandfather Mountain at MP 308.3 for the Flat Rock overlook/trail. Just pack some beverages of choice and snacks and make sure to leave enough time to drive there plus 20 minutes for hiking. You will want to be there about 1/2 before sunset at least. The views are spectacular with a flat, open outcropping to rest upon. As tempting as it might be, make sure not to stay too late or you might get stuck on a wooded trail in the dark woods (maybe a little experience speaking here) Another great overhang only a few mile away with a simple hike and great views is Beacon Heights at MP 305.2. Summer Swimming: Wildcat Lake is located is the quaint town of Banner Elk about 25 minutes from Knob Hill Chalet. It is free to the public and simple fun swimming with the fish in a beautiful setting. Just wear a bathing suit and bring a towel! Elk River Falls is a local watering hole with a big waterfall and a cool pool to swim in. It is a great place to hang out on a hot summer day. Many people jump from different levels of the falls. While entertaining to watch, be careful as there have been fatalities from the top of the falls. |
Fall Fun:
Picturesque Pumpkin Patch Fall brings cool weather, beautiful foliage, and pumpkins. A fun corn maze and pumpkin patch is the New River Corn maze which we like to compete who can complete the fastest. Somehow, the adults always lose but at least we get a nice pumpkin to bring home. |
