Day Trips from Knob Hill
There is a lot to do in the High Country any time you visit -- but not too far away there are some fabulous adventures if here for a longer stay. Biltmore Estate The Biltmore Estate is about a 2-2 1/2 hour leisurely drive from the Knob Hill Chalet depending on the path you decide to take. The Biltmore is located by Asheville, NC which is a wonderful exploring destination on its own. So you may want to take another trip just to visit Asheville and its surrounding areas! But if the Biltmore is your destination, it can be accomplished in a long day's adventure if you start early. It is beautiful with a interesting history of the Vanderbilts. Wear your walking shoes because the estate is 8000 acres, 4 acres is just for the mansion! And just as grand as the estate is the price of admission. Your estate admission includes a self-guided visit to Biltmore House & Gardens, as well as access to Antler Hill Village and Winery. Chimney Rock A little farther still is the quaint small town of Chimney Rock. It is about 30 minutes outside of Asheville (about 2 1/2 - 3hrs from the Knob Hill Chalet). Known for its waterfall in the movie 'The Last of the Mohigans', visiting the Chimney Rock beside the town offers a fun hike with incredible views. Lake Lure Going an additional 15 minutes brings you to Lake Lure, a breathtaking lake surrounded by mountains. It offers boating, swimming, hiking, and million dollar views. While definitely worth a visit, you will want may want to stay longer than a day's trip as this is about 3 hours from the Knob Hill Chalet. |
Virginia Creeper Trail
If you are looking for a incredibly fun bike ride, this trip is a must-do! It is only about an hour's drive north into Virginia. The entire trail is 34 miles from Abbington to Damascus, Virginia. But for first timers and those that just love letting gravity do most of the work, a super fun biking experience is to ride the section from Whitetop down to Damascus. Bike rental companies in Damascus and Abingdon will shuttle you to the top of the mountain for an easy 17-mile coast/pedal down to Damascus. The ride takes anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, depending on your pace. While there is a food place along the way in Taylor's Valley, bringing a picnic lunch, plenty of water, and snacks in a back pack are the best bet. |
