Apple Orchard at Altapass
The Apple Orchard at Altapass is one of our favorite places to visit especially when the apples are ripe for the picking!
Open May through October, it is about a 45 minute drive from Knob Hill Chalet if you travel along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Choose a pretty day to meander along the Blue Ridge Parkway towards Spruce Pine, around milepost 328.3. The Orchard is visible from the Parkway. It is one of the most beautiful and peaceful settings. Everyone there is warm and inviting. Often, you can listen to a band playing music and even join in dancing. There is an ice cream shop to enjoy a treat on the back deck and they have lots of local jellies and jams Of course, the best time is September - October for apple picking. It may be crowded on days they offer historic hay rides and talk about the Civil War. You can grab a bag and just wander around the orchard picking the apples. They also have a butterfly garden where they participate in the Monarch preservation project. |
It is just such a great place to explore and they offer lots of fun events throughout the year.
